Glaucoma Treatment: Restoring Clear Vision
Glaucoma can damage your optic nerve and lead to vision loss or even blindness if not treated early. It usually happens when pressure builds up inside your eye, often because fluid can’t drain properly. The scary part? Glaucoma often has no early symptoms, so many people don’t even know they have it until their vision starts to fade.
The main goal of glaucoma treatment is to lower the pressure inside your eye (called intraocular pressure or IOP) to a safe level. Here’s how doctors usually treat glaucoma:
- 1. Eye drops: These are the most common treatment. They help lower eye pressure by either reducing fluid production or helping fluid drain better.
- 2. Laser treatment: A quick, often painless procedure that helps fluid drain from the eye. It’s sometimes used if drops aren’t enough.
- 3. Surgery: If other treatments don’t work, surgery can create new drainage pathways for the fluid, lowering pressure and protecting your vision. MIGS (Microinvasive Glaucoma Surgery) is routinely performed in an attempt to lower eye pressure with minimal risks to the eye.
It’s important to remember:
- 1. Glaucoma can’t be cured, and lost vision can’t be restored, but treatment can stop it from getting worse.
- 2. Regular eye check-ups are key for early detection.
- 3. Always use your medication as prescribed and don’t skip follow-up appointments.
